Okoro Uwale, known by her stage name Essence has gone under the radar in the last couple of years, but is making a return to the spotlight with two new albums both released this year. She released The Shift in July and Living Water in April. Essence has dedicated herself and her art to her faith, and both albums are filled with soulful ballads in the name of the Lord.
Essence’s work is a mix of gospel and afrobeat, and many of her songs take subtle elements from rap or more mainstream pop music. It’s a refreshing take on the genre of gospel and worship music, which too often tends towards either sincere music that is difficult to enjoy casually, or poor attempts at entering into more popular styles like rock or pop. Essence’s work is a rare example of music about faith that can be enjoyed both casually and as an extension of one’s faith.
The Gospel star will also be appearing alongside other massive artists in the Nigerian gospel music scene on October 28th at the Revival Assembly in Lekki, Lagos. Starting at 3pm it promises to be an unforgettable night for the faithful who attend, with artists such as Nedjon, Ighosa, Ty Classical, and of course Essence. Details about the event can be found in the attached image.
