Throwback time! Eedris Abdulkareem's most popular song: Jaga Jaga!
11 May 2021
Eedris Abdulkareem has been rapping ever since his student days, and has had a notable career since then. What many old school fans of Eedris may well know him for is the legendary Jaga Jaga, the 2004 hit that has a swathe of history regarding its impact and legacy. A man known for standing his ground on his ideals and unabashedly working through controversies caused by the corrupt groups he calls out in his music, to say that Jaga Jaga is the greatest controversial landmark in Eedris’ multi-decade career indicates that this is an artist and a song both worth keeping an eye on. It’s his most popular song, so popular that nearly 20 years later, he’s released a whole new reimagining of the song in the form of “Jaga Jaga Reloaded”. Its impact cannot be understated, and today, we want to take the time to go back to the past and appreciate the titanic milestone that is Jaga Jaga.

Eedris first grabbed the public’s attention after joining the group The Remedies. This group included the likes of Tony Tetuilla and Eddy Montana, and enjoyed incredible success before they went their separate ways, with each member acting as a solo artist. In 2002, Eedris released his first solo album “Pass”, which was well received by music pundits. He followed it up with “Mr Lecturer”, which mainly focuses on the sexual harassment taking place in Nigerian Universities. In 2004 he dropped another album, that being of course “Jaga Jaga”, which was even more controversial than his previous ones. The title track is centered on the corruption and suffering in Nigeria. However, the song was banned on radio and television stations by the then-president, Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2005, the rapper launched his own record label known as Lakreem Music, and released his 4th album “Letter To Mr President”, an album which addresses Obasanjo’s criticisms on the song “Jaga Jaga”. Eedris has never been one to back down, and the fact that he’s still pushing the Jaga Jaga mantra after all these years truly shows that!

It’s been a long time since Eedris gifted us with his landmark hit “Jaga Jaga”, and almost 20 years later, we finally have the sequel. Featuring the talent of Mr Raw and Madarocka Chi, this faithful retake on Jaga Jaga brings Eedris fans everything they’d expect, considering how dire the world is even nowadays. It’s sad to think about, but we aren’t going to have a perfect society – and Eedris knows that. But he also knows we can do better than this. Luckily, he has just the thing to straighten out Nigeria. “Jaga Jaga Reloaded” is coming in hot along with the original “Jaga Jaga”, with a truth bomb combo that we haven’t seen the likes of in decades!

If a song is so good that it’s STILL in people’s minds decades later and even inspiring a sequel song with an all-star cast, that’s how you know that this is truly one for the ages. From 2004 to the 2020s, Eedris has been on people’s radars, and both iterations of Jaga Jaga, new and old, are to thank for that. Eedris Abdulkareem is an inspiring rapper with an amazing history behind him, and many classics of his such as “Jaga Jaga” and this new iteration of “Jaga Jaga” illustrate his great musical ability. He is not afraid to speak out for what he believes in and is truly a commendable artist.
