A Founder Who Challenged the Industry
The Naked Truth originated in Atlanta, Georgia’s hardcore scene in 1988. The original line-up brought together musicians from different parts of the United States, with Doug Watts arriving from Detroit, bassist Jeff from Harlem, drummer Bernard Dawson from Los Angeles and guitarist Jimmie Westley from Savannah, Georgia.

During a period when Black artists received limited visibility within punk, hardcore and heavy metal, Doug refused to allow industry prejudice to define the band’s future.

Instead, those experiences became part of the music.
The Naked Truth developed an aggressive and intelligent sound that blended punk, hardcore, metal, jazz, funk and socially driven lyricism. Doug’s vocal delivery moved between rap-influenced rhythms, melodic expression and full-force hardcore intensity, giving the band a distinctive identity that could not be easily categorised.

From Atlanta to London
The band’s originality and determination attracted the attention of Bernie Rhodes, the influential former manager of The Clash.

Rhodes helped The Naked Truth secure a relationship with Sony and supported the band’s relocation to London, where they developed a dedicated following through live performances and residencies. The band later toured with Scat Opera and Little Angels, while a proposed Motörhead support opportunity was lost following the cancellation of the associated tour.

The move to the United Kingdom marked a significant chapter in Doug’s career.

It gave The Naked Truth an international platform while demonstrating that an independent Black punk-metal band from Atlanta could connect with audiences far beyond its original scene.

Doug’s presence at the front of the band remained central to that connection. His performances carried urgency, conviction and a clear refusal to compromise.

Music Built on Truth, Resistance and Creative Freedom

Releases including Green With Rage, Read Between the Lines and Fight presented a band willing to move freely between heavy styles while addressing social pressure, identity, frustration and the need for change.
