Back during the BLM protests of June 2020, What If saw a huge boost in popularity. It makes sense, given the strong theme of social justice that the lyrics support, and LadyDice was ready to champion that cause too, posting eagerly about it on her social media. This track has been going strong since its release in 2017, and it proved oddly prophetic, especially LadyDice’s verse. www.facebook.com/BadmouthBetty
The track became known as a bit of an anthem, and that momentum hasn’t slowed down in the least, even two years later! Because of this, we decided we would write a retrospective piece on it, starting with the informative making-of featurette, parts 1 and 2!
Despite being catchy, the track is saturated with hopeful ideals, and even though it was relevant back at its release, it’s like we’ve come full circle now that these societal issues have erupted once again in 2020, and have continued as a hot topic two years later. And to think, the track released even before that, around 2017! It’s certainly been a brightly burning song for quite a while. With all the change needed in society, especially concerning racial issues, it can be foreseen that this track will be relevant still for many years to come.
During all of these crises, societal shifts, viral threats to our lives, and other such trials, people still stand together in solidarity. That is the beauty of the human race, and LadyDice and her crew are representing it in a big way! So What If we were all to represent it too? One thing’s for sure. Music videos like this slapper here might become a whole lot more real, in the best way possible. What if? Don’t just ask. Get out there and find out!
